Loudspeakers at Tweek Geek
Loudspeakers are the final link in your audio system, transmitting the reality and emotion of the recorded event.
We have listened to many different brands and styles of audiophile loudspeakers, and have chosen a few that we feel represent the best value to performance ratio. Vivid Audio Vivid Audio Loudspeakers have an impressive pedigree. The chief designer of B&W's flagship Nautilus loudspeaker, Laurence Dickie, and a former owner of B&W joined forces to form Vivid Audio. The designs are a striking departure from traditional loudspeakers both visually and sonically. These speakers are loaded with cutting edge proprietary technology. The end result is stunning reproduction in a speakers that looks like a work of art.
Waterfall Audio Waterfall Audio is a French company that hand crafts loudspeakers out of glass. Glass is actually denser and less resonant than MDF, with the added benefit of being transparent. The drivers are sourced from Atohm of France, and there are some very interesting patented technologies used inside the loudspeaker to maintain it's chameleon like appearance without sacrificing performance. Our personal favorite is the Victoria. It produces deep tuneful bass that totally belies its size, creates a wonderful 3-dimensional soundstage, and has tremendous output that never sounds strained at any listening level.
Usher Usher has taken another approach to extracting the maximum amount of information from the musical performance. They use drivers made of lightweight and stiff exotic materials like beryllium. The Dancer series of loudspeakers feature beryllium tweeters throughout, and in the Be-10 and Be-20, Beryllium midranges are featured as well. Their designs have garnered many awards from the press, and raves from audiophiles. The fit and finish of all of their loudspeakers is unbelievable for the price. Real wood veneers, piano black front baffles in some instances, and unique enclosure shapes designed to eliminate standing waves also lend themselves to a beautiful aesthetic. The sound is warm, musical and non-fatiguing. The best buy in the Dancer series would have to be the Mini Dancer 2. With the floor standing design, higher bass output of 2 woofers, and higher efficiency you have a very versatile loudspeaker that any audiophile could love for years.
Reference 3A
Characterized by a very tranparent, fast, and open sound. This is mostly due to the crossoverless midrange driver that is matched seemlessly to their custom woofers and tweeters. Their philosophy is that crossover parts placed in the signal path rob the amplifiers ability to couple with the speaker, and rob the music of subtle details that mean the difference between hearing sound and becoming engrossed in a musical experience. The midrange frequencies are where the human ear is most sensitive the the detrimental effects of crossover parts, so Reference 3A has designed a midrange driver that rolls off naturally at the extremes of its frequency response, negating the need for a crossover to be placed on it. The end result is indeed stunning. More musical detail, improved harmonic layering leading to a more realistic and engaging listening experience. The Grand Veena has certainly won its share of praise for its exceptional full-range performance at an extraordinary price. But we were also very impressed with the Dulcet mini monitor. The ability of this monitor to disappear, and generate a reasonable bass response makes us believe that it is one of the finest mini monitors in the world.
