Audience ClairAudient 1+1 V2 - Priced per pair
Newly designed driver for even better performance than the award winning 1+1
The ClairAudient 1+1 V2 is a bi-pole (front- and rear-radiating) design that is compact, yet provides surprisingly expansive sound. It is outfitted with 2 of Audience's own 3" A-3S2-16 drivers on the front and rear, with dual passive radiators flanking the sides. You won't find any crossover parts in the signal path to smear harmonics and blur transients however.
The 1+1-V2 is the result of a highly improved Audience full range driver, the A3S2-16. The new driver basket and motor are machined to higher tolerances for a more precision assembly. The new driver also has a notably more powerful motor made possible by the use of higher-quality steel for the neodymium magnet. The new driver utilizes custom OHNO oxygen-free copper (OCC) leads between the motor assembly and the speaker lugs for improved conductivity. In addition, the A3S2-16 now has one 16-Ohm voice coil rather than the dual-8-Ohm voice coils of the previous driver, eliminating a jumper wire on each driver and the associated connections that were needed to parallel the two previous 8-Ohm voice coils to yield 16 Ohms for each of the two drivers.
The A-3S2-16 driver
The Audience proprietary A3-S driver, although just 3 inches in diameter, delivers extremely flat frequency response from 50Hz to 22kHz (depending on room placement), eliminating the need for a separate woofer, midrange driver, tweeter, and crossover network. As a result the inherent problems of integrating multiple sonically dissimilar drivers and the accompanying phase distortions, loss of resolution and transient response degradation of a crossover network are completely avoided. The dual side-mounted passive radiators augment the output of the A-3S2-16 drivers and enable the 1+1 V2 to deliver outstanding presence and dynamic contrast.
The A3S2-16 driver incorporates numerous engineering refinements such as a large patented neodymium-magnet motor structure and voice coil that moves with a highly linear excursion of 12mm; an exclusive titanium alloy cone material with a curvilinear shape; a concave dust cap specially designed to control high-frequency cone breakup and provide optimum dispersion; a unique "S"-shaped surround that allows the driver to behave more like an ideal pistonic radiator, and many additional enhancements.
The 1+1 V2 also utilizes Audience's unique SSIT SweetSpace TM Imaging Technology that provides an expanded listening area rather than the usual single listener sweet spot.
The + Version
The 1+1-V2+'s available + upgrade provides yet another degree of sonic refinement. The 1+1-V2+ adds beautiful solder-less Tellurium binding posts and Audience premium Au24 internal wiring. The + kit option adds yet another layer of refinement, particularly evident by the smoothness, improved timbre and tonal richness.
The sonic results are significant: better resolution, "speed" and soundstaging and a more realistic timbre and natural quality to vocals and instruments. "The improvement provided by the new A3S2-16 driver is not subtle," said John McDonald, President of Audience. "It takes this already exceptional loudspeaker into an entirely new realm of listener involvement. The speaker sounds bigger, more powerful and more high-end. For everyone who was surprised at what this small speaker could do before, they're going to be even more impressed when they hear the new V2
A Word On Break-in
The ClairAudient 1+1 V2needs 150 hours of break-in. It may sound colored right out of the box. Please do not lose heart. Be patient and allow them to break-in fully. You will be rewarded...
A Word On Placement
Since the ClairAudient 1+1 is a bidirectional speaker, it needs to be placed far away from the back wall to avoid smearing of the image by early sonic reflections. To achieve the proper ambient balance of direct vs. reflected sound get them around 5 feet from the back wall if possible.
A Word On Amplification
To get the best sound out of the ClairAudient 1+1 V2, you will need a bit of power. Small amplifiers will not light these up to their potential. An amplifier in the 100 watt range will really enable these to perform their best.
To Sub or Not To Sub?
If you listen to rock, electronica, dubstep, hip-hop, etc. and desire some bass oomph below 40-50hz, a quality subwoofer is necessary to fill in the bottom end.
The Best is Yet To Come

The resolution and detail is definitely there, but I'm
still at less than 50 hrs break-in and have considerable hash in the top end. I ordered a sub
woofer (REL) but got the wrong size, returned it
and plan to get two smaller RELs. That should
fix several problems. I listen to orchestral CDs
that take a lot a speaker can give so I'm keeping
me fingers crossed.
Forgot to mention a big ingredient-I'm using a tube
amp with 6 watts per channel(!). I have on order a
solid-state Rotel 120 wpm amp (in fact I should have
received it yesterday.)
So I'm optimistic!
